QuickBooks Desktop Bank Feeds End October 30, Don’t Wait for Month-End

If you run QuickBooks Desktop and your bank feed stops this fall, nothing is wrong with your company file. But the automatic path for transactions is closing, and the cost lands squarely on whoever does your books.

The deadline is real, and close. Deal with it now, in October, not at the November month-end close when you are already behind.

Taking action immediately prevents the problem from getting bigger. It also produces a better result at the end: less time sorting through missing transactions, more time making decisions about growth, cash flow, and taxes with better information.

A closed feed is not a catastrophe. A closed feed nobody notices until January is.

Two separate QuickBooks Desktop changes are happening

People are mixing these up because both affect bank feeds. They are not the same thing.

1. Direct Connect is being retired bank by bank

Direct Connect is the two-way connection between QuickBooks Desktop and your bank’s own server. Depending on the bank, it can:

  • Download transactions into QuickBooks
  • Send transfers
  • Send bill payments
  • Require bank-side enrollment
  • Carry a separate bank fee

Many banks have announced October 30, 2026 as their cutoff. Your bank sets its own date and replacement process, so check your bank’s notice directly. For example, California Bank & Trust explains its October 30 Direct Connect cutoff.

Some banks stopped accepting new Direct Connect enrollments earlier in 2026. Amegy Bank, for example, ended new enrollments on April 30.

After your bank’s cutoff, a supported Desktop file that relies on Direct Connect simply stops receiving transactions through that connection. Transactions already inside your company file are not deleted or changed.

If your version of Desktop is still supported and only your bank is changing its connection, Web Connect .qbo imports should still work. Express Web Connect may also be available, depending on your bank and software version.

2. Discontinued Desktop versions lost Bank Feeds entirely

QuickBooks Desktop 2023 lost Bank Feeds after May 31, 2026. That includes:

  • Pro Plus 2023
  • Premier Plus 2023
  • Premier Accountant Edition Plus 2023
  • Enterprise Solutions 23.0
  • Enterprise Accountant 23.0
  • QuickBooks Desktop for Mac Plus 2023

This catches people off guard because Intuit switched off both directions of the Bank Feeds service.

That means:

  • Transactions no longer download automatically
  • A .qbo Web Connect file can no longer be uploaded through the Bank Feeds workflow
  • Desktop Payroll is deactivated
  • Payroll tax forms are not filed on your behalf
  • Desktop Payments stop working
  • Security updates end

The software still opens. Your history remains intact. You can still enter and edit transactions. But the convenient banking connection is gone.

The three feed types you need to distinguish

The names are similar, which is where the confusion starts.

Direct Connect

QuickBooks talks directly to the bank’s server.

  • Two-way connection
  • May support transfers and bill payments
  • Being retired bank by bank
  • Many banks have announced October 30, 2026

Express Web Connect

Intuit’s connection service retrieves transactions from the bank, and QuickBooks pulls them into Desktop.

  • One-way transaction flow
  • Set up inside QuickBooks
  • Availability depends on your bank and Desktop version
  • Not the same as Direct Connect

Web Connect

You download a .qbo file from online banking and import it yourself.

  • One-way
  • Manual
  • No live connection
  • Usually available as an alternative when Direct Connect ends
  • Does not work through the Bank Feeds service on discontinued Desktop versions such as 2023

Your bank may point you toward Web Connect unless you are using a discontinued version.

What to do before the October cutoff

Do not wait for the first failed download. Use this checklist now.

1. List every account using Direct Connect

Open the Bank Feeds center in QuickBooks Desktop and identify the connection type for every checking account, savings account, credit card, and line of credit.

Do not assume every account at the same bank uses the same setup.

2. Check each bank’s notice

The bank, not a random old article, sets the actual cutoff date and recommended replacement.

Look for notices in:

  • Online banking messages
  • Business banking support pages
  • Treasury management emails
  • QuickBooks connection settings
  • Your bank’s digital banking department

3. Switch to Express Web Connect if available

If your bank and supported Desktop version offer Express Web Connect, switch before Direct Connect ends.

Then confirm that at least one download works. Do not call the setup complete just because the connection says “active.”

4. Set up a Web Connect routine if necessary

If Express Web Connect is unavailable, find the .qbo download option in your bank’s online banking. It is often near the CSV and PDF statement options.

In QuickBooks Desktop, the usual path is:

File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files

Download one month and test the import now. Save the .qbo file with the matching bank statement.

Then build a simple habit:

  • Download each account once per month
  • Use a consistent file name
  • Store the file with the statement
  • Import before month-end close
  • Reconcile immediately

5. Know your options if you are on Desktop 2023

If your discontinued version no longer accepts .qbo files through Bank Feeds, your surviving options include:

  • IIF import: File → Utilities → Import → IIF Files
  • A third-party importer that writes through the QuickBooks SDK to your open local company file
  • Manual transaction entry

IIF is a local file format that does not rely on Intuit’s Bank Feeds servers. Manual entry still works, but it is the slowest and most error-prone option.

6. Do not assume a QuickBooks Online move fills every gap

If the sunset forces you to consider QuickBooks Online, budget for missing history.

A new QBO bank feed commonly retrieves only around 90 days of recent transactions, although the exact window is set by the bank. If you migrate in November and need January transactions, the new feed will not magically supply January.

You may need to rebuild earlier months from:

  • Bank statements
  • Downloaded transaction files
  • Credit card statements
  • Payment processor records
  • Existing Desktop reports

That work takes time, and cleanup costs more than keeping the books current.

7. Reconcile once through the new route

Before relying on the replacement connection at month-end, complete one reconciliation using it.

The ten-second test is simple:

The closing balance in QuickBooks must match the closing balance printed on the statement.

If it does not match, stop and investigate. A feed that downloads transactions is not automatically a feed that downloaded everything.

Why this matters more during the final quarter

It is early October. The leaves are down, the first snow dusting is showing up, and year-end close season is coming fast.

That is exactly the wrong time to discover that transactions quietly stopped arriving.

Around 75% of my current bookkeeping work comes from clients whose books were previously handled by services that looked functional and turned out to be catastrophically wrong over the long term. A dead bank feed is one of the classic ways that happens.

The reports still print. The dashboard still opens. Nothing flashes red.

Meanwhile, transactions stop arriving.

Six months later, rebuilding the books from PDF statements is archaeology, not bookkeeping. It makes your eyes bleed, burns expensive hours, and delays the information you need to make decisions.

A properly deployed hybrid bookkeeping system helps. AI can handle categorization, reconciliation support, and receipt scanning. Humans retain ownership of judgment, tax law, and strategy, and a human must confirm that the data actually arrived.

When an experienced bookkeeper oversees the system, properly deployed AI resources can save a small business four to eight hours per week. Results vary by business size, market, transaction volume, and accounting setup. The time savings only happen when the system is monitored and corrected.

A note about payments and sales tax

Payment processor and POS deposits may arrive in QuickBooks as either net or gross amounts depending on your processor, account setup, fees, and workflow.

That affects how deposits, fees, sales tax, and income are recorded. Do not assume that a deposit matching your bank statement automatically reflects the correct sales-tax treatment.

This article provides diagnostic information only. It is not individualized tax advice. Sales-tax rules and filing requirements depend on your location, products, services, customer locations, registration status, and accounting setup. Ask your tax professional about your specific obligations.

The better result is available now

You do not need to panic. You do need to act.

Find out:

  • Which bank accounts use Direct Connect
  • Which Desktop version you are running
  • Whether your bank supports Express Web Connect
  • Whether .qbo downloads work in your version
  • Whether you need an IIF or third-party import process
  • Whether your January-through-September records are complete

If you are unsure which accounts are affected or which version of QuickBooks Desktop you have, send me a question through the contact page.

The QuickBooks Online Diagnostic Service can also identify where your banking feeds, transactions, reconciliations, and workflows are creating risk. It is a way to find the problem before the problem becomes a year-end cleanup project.

Take care of the feed now. You will spend less time sorting through year-end later, and more time making growth and tax decisions with reliable information.

Summary for Sonny

Hook: QuickBooks Desktop bank feeds are changing now, and waiting until November can turn a simple connection switch into a painful year-end rebuild.

Key takeaways:

  • Direct Connect is being retired bank by bank, with many banks using October 30, 2026 as the cutoff.
  • QuickBooks Desktop 2023 already lost Bank Feeds after May 31, 2026, including .qbo Web Connect imports through the Bank Feeds workflow.
  • Switch to Express Web Connect or test a Web Connect, IIF, or third-party import process before month-end.
  • The closing balance in QuickBooks must match the statement after every import.
